At least 10 injured in Colorado hot air balloon crashes

DENVER (Reuters) - Gusty winds forced the crash landings of four hot air balloons in separate mishaps on Saturday northwest of Denver, leaving at least 10 people hurt, but none of the injuries was life-threatening, authorities said.

All of the aborted flights occurred in wide-open areas frequented by balloon enthusiasts, according to Dana Lewis, a spokesman for the Rocky Mountain Fire Protection District.

National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Kalina said sustained winds of 20 to 30 miles an hour, with gusts of up to 35 mph, were reported in the area at the time of the crash landings.

Lewis said one balloon carrying 10 passengers and a pilot went down inside the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge, injuring five people, one of whom suffered "a fairly significant ankle injury."

In Boulder County, a balloon with a pilot and 11 passengers "impacted the ground hard" inside a wildlife conservation area, said local sheriff's spokesman Deputy Mitch Rosebrough.

"The weather conditions were calm and warm early this morning, but changed to gusty winds at the time of the crash," Rosebrough said. Two passengers were transported to a local hospital with neck and back injuries, he said.

In neighboring Arvada, the pilot of a balloon was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and two passengers were treated at the scene after the aircraft crash landed, said Scott Pribble, spokesman for the Arvada Fire Protection District.

A fourth balloon went down in nearby Louisville, Colorado, but there were no reports of injuries.

Separately, a small airplane crashed on Saturday in a remote corner of the Great Sand Dunes National Park, about 230 miles southwest of Denver, killing one person aboard the aircraft and injuring two others, a park spokeswoman said.

Pa. building collapses, at least 13 injured

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Authorities say 14 people were taken from a building collapse in central Philadelphia and 13 were taken to hospitals with mostly minor injuries.

Officials have declined to comment on the status of the 14th person.

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers and Mayor Michael Nutter said Wednesday the rescue effort would continue with the aid of two search and rescue dogs until officials were assured no other victims remained.

Ayers says rescuers pulled a woman trapped amid the rubble of a Salvation Army thrift store after they heard her voice after the 10:45 a.m. collapse on the edge of the downtown area.

Rescuers used buckets and their bare hands to move bricks and rubble.

20 injured in Pennsylvania bus accident

(CNN) -- A Greyhound bus overturned in southeastern Pennsylvania early Saturday, injuring at least 20 people, a transportation spokesman said.

All of the injured have been relocated from the scene off the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Lancaster County and between 20 and 25 passengers people were transported to hospitals, said turnpike spokesman Carl DeSebo.

Helicopters were on standby, but no one was airlifted, he said.

Four passengers were uninjured and picked up by another Greyhound bus, company spokeswoman Maureen Richmond said. A total of 28 people had been on the bus, she said.

The bus originated in New York with a destination of St. Louis, she said. The bus was on the Philadelphia to Columbus, Ohio leg of the trip at the time of the accident, she said.

1 Marine killed, 5 injured in helicopter crash

Los Angeles (CNN) -- One of the Marines injured in a helicopter crash in southern California has died, authorities said.

The Marine, whose name was not released, was among six who were rushed to hospitals after a UH-1Y (Huey) helicopter crashed in the northern section of Camp Pendleton on Wednesday, a Marine Corps statement said.

The other five were recuperating early Thursday morning.

The helicopter, belonging to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, crashed shortly before noon Wednesday in the San Mateo Area of Camp Pendleton, southeast of San Clemente.

Officials are investigating what caused the mishap.

Chile: Anarchist seriously injured by own bomb (AP)

SANTIAGO, Chile – A suspected anarchist in Chile has been seriously injured when a bomb he allegedly carried exploded outside a bank.

Police say 22-year-old Luciano Pitronello Schuffeneger lost his eyesight and may lose both his arms. He's also suffering serious burns and is hospitalized in a drug-induced coma.

Prosecutor Hector Barros is pursuing a terrorism case against 15 anarchists charged in similar bombings.

Witnesses say the man's accomplice fled on a motorcycle after the bomb exploded outside a Banco Santander office early Wednesday.

This is the first injury in Chile's many early-morning bomb attacks. There has been just one one death, that of a man whose backpack exploded.

In a recent Web posting, she wrote: "The doctors want to limit visitors, noise and physical contact with Bryan. They're wanting to keep his brain calm and just ... quiet ... to see how that works. ... That way the neurologists can get a better reading of brain activity. Fever down."

Bonnie Stow said her brother's seizures have subsided, and over the next 24 to 48 hours doctors want to gradually reduce the sedation he is under and, hopefully, bring him out of the medically induced coma.

"We can't wait for Bryan to wake up so he can see for himself just how much people love him, whether they are family, friends or strangers."

Since the unprovoked attack after the March 31 game at Dodger Stadium, money has poured in from numerous donors and fundraising events to help pay for medical costs and provide support for his two young children. Bonnie Stow said the website also identifies fundraising activity endorsed by Stow's family.

L.A. officials ask two suspects to surrender

"We are trying to post only legitimate fundraisers that we can confirm because unfortunately there are those trying to take advantage of this tragic situation," said Bonnie in a posting.

At a dual fundraiser Monday at Dodger Stadium and AT&T Park in San Francisco, where the Giants and Dodgers played Monday, more than $120,000 was raised, said American Medical Response spokesman Jason Sorrick. More than $200,000 has been raised for Stow, who works for AMR.

Meanwhile, investigators continued their search for the two suspected assailants, who fled after the beating in a light-colored, four-door car driven by a woman with a young boy inside, authorities said. Since the release of composite sketches, police have investigated more than 100 clues based on calls and tips, said Los Angeles Police Detective PJ Morris.

About 100 witnesses saw Stow attacked as he left the stadium parking lot, and Morris said some of them have provided useful information. Officials are offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to arrests and convictions.

"Whether it's the reward money or a Good Samaritan who wants to help solve a horrific crime, there has been a tremendous outpouring of calls from people who might have useful information," Morris said.

Morris said detectives have compiled and presented photographic lineups of possible suspects to witnesses in the Los Angeles area but no one has identified Stow's attackers. Another team of detectives has been showing the photos to witnesses in the Bay Area.

"Every call and tip is helpful in some capacity, even if it eliminates someone who may resemble the composite sketches," Morris said. "There is no forensic evidence in this case, therefore that person who comes forward is most likely how we're going to solve this thing."

One child dead, several injured in Mississippi bus crash

The bus was carrying elementary-school and high-school students when the accident happened around 7 a.m. Friday, said Cedrick Ellis, superintendent of the Shaw School District, in Shaw, Mississippi.

A "younger child" was killed in the accident, said Dr. J.O. Trice, a deputy county coroner.

Ellis said the bus and a tractor-trailer loaded with gravel collided, causing both vehicles to overturn.

The Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol is investigating, Ellis said. It was not clear if the fog contributed to the crash,.
