Trump Downplays Romney as 'Small Business Guy,' Touts Personal Fortune

Potential presidential candidate Donald Trump says he's a better businessman than a leading GOP hopeful in 2012, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. 

Trump tells CNN's "State of the Union" that he has a "much, much bigger net worth. I mean my net worth is many, many, many times Mitt Romney." 

Trump describes Romney as a "small business guy." Trump says he's created thousands of jobs and built a "great company." 

Romney is a former venture capitalist with a record of turning around failing companies. While heading Bain Capital, he helped launch the Staples office supply chain, as well as buy Domino's Pizza. Romney invested more than $40 million of his own money in the 2008 race.

Student video touts Mitt Romney for president

Romney "stands as the most qualified Republican candidate due in large measure to his career as a leader in both the public and private sectors," says Garrett Sweitzer, a Vanderbilt University junior who is a founder and chairman of the student group.

Sweitzer says the group has supporters on about 40 campuses in 25 states.

The video was produced by Thomas Tatum, a graduating senior at Boston College, who said his intent was to show "the real concerns of real students preparing for graduation in May and June into an economy made uncertain by the economic policies of the Obama administration."

Students for Mitt Romney is actually formed as a political action committee that can make independent expenditures that aren't coordinated with the candidate. The group has a Facebook page here.

He started there by running for Republican candidate in U.S. Senate election from the state of Massachusetts but his career was not as successful in this field as it was in business. He lost to Edward M. Kennedy. In the year 2002, he ran for the Governor of Massachusetts and this time he won and stayed in the office for four years from 2003 to 2007. He did not run for the office again.

Mitt Romney launches exploratory bid for president

The Massachusetts legislation was partly the inspiration for a national health care law signed by Obama that Republicans such as Romney have attacked repeatedly. The fifth anniversary of Romney signing the Massachusetts measure into law is on Tuesday, April 12.

In his video, Romney talks about his record handling the Bay State's economy from 2003-2007 and his ability to create jobs, both as an elected official and in the private sector, as head of the management firm Bain & Co.

Romney becomes the second major Republican candidate to form a presidential exploratory committee, in what so far has been a slow start to the 2012 White House contest. Ex-Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty has also formed an exploratory committee.

The Gallup Poll has found Romney, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and ex-House speaker Newt Gingrich to be the best situated among GOP presidential hopefuls in terms of name recognition and for generating intensity among GOP voters.

Mitt Romney Announces Exploratory Committee for 2012 Presidential Bid

Mitt Romney announced Monday he's forming an exploratory committee, the first step toward launching a presidential bid.

In a YouTube video accompanied by a Twitter announcement, the former Massachusetts governor said it's time to restore America's greatness.

"It's time that we put America back on a course of greatness, with a growing economy, good jobs and fiscal discipline in Washington," he says in the two-and-a-half minute video, "Believe in America," taped at the University of New Hampshire. 

In the video, Romney adds that President Obama's policies have failed because "he and virtually all the people around him have never worked in the real economy. They just don't know how jobs are created in the private sector."

Romney made the announcement one day shy of the fifth anniversary of the passage of Massachusetts' health care law that Obama and Democrats mockingly say was the model for the president's health care law, reviled by Republicans. 

Romney has said the plan was changed many times from its original inception, but nonetheless health care is a state-by-state decision.

Romney, a businessman who ran Salt Lake City's Winter Olympics, has lined up donors, staff and advisers for his expected presidential bid. He has quietly built a by-the-books campaign organization that is stacked with experienced presidential operatives. 

In his announcement video, recorded Monday, he underscored what is expected to be his overarching campaign theme. 

"From my vantage point in business and in government, I have become convinced that America has been put on a dangerous course by Washington politicians, and it has become even worse during the last two years," Romney said. "But I am also convinced that with able leadership, America's best days are still ahead."

Romney lost the Republican nomination to John McCain in 2008. He had invested more than $40 million of his own money into the 2008 race and counted on early wins in bellwether states Iowa and New Hampshire that never developed.
