UN urges Syria to allow aid groups into Qusair

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The Security Council is urging Syria to immediately allow U.N. and other humanitarian groups into the strategic town of Qusair to provide aid to civilians who desperately need food and medical care.

The council expressed "grave concern" at the humanitarian impact of the recent heavy fighting in Qusair, where rebel fighters were routed by government forces on Wednesday.

Council members called on all parties "to do their utmost to protect civilians and avoid civilian casualties," stressing the Syrian government's primary responsibility. They emphasized that those responsible for violating international human rights law will be held accountable.

The press statement Friday was a rare display of agreement by the 15 council nations, which have been deeply divided over the Syrian conflict.
