Tropical depression forms off the coast of Belize

MIAMI (AP) — A tropical depression has formed off the coast of Belize and forecasters say it is expected to bring as much as five inches of rain to parts of Belize, Guatemala, northern Honduras and southern Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the Atlantic season's second tropical depression formed Monday and that the center will move over Belize and northern Guatemala overnight. The depression has maximum sustained winds of 30 mph (48 kph). Some weakening is expected after the depression moves over land, but it could strengthen by Wednesday if the center emerges in the Bay of Campeche. It was moving west-northwest at 9 mph (14 kph), and located about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Monkey River Town, Belize late Monday.

Forecasters say heavy rains could cause flash flooding, especially in mountainous areas, but no coastal watches or warnings were issued.
