Next NRA leader: Members fighting 'culture war'

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The incoming president of the National Rifle Association is warning its members they are fighting a "culture war" that goes beyond gun rights.

James Porter, currently the organization's first vice president, will take over the top job on Monday. He spoke Friday at the NRA's national convention in Houston.

In a short speech to a grass-roots organizing meeting, Porter said NRA members are the nation's "fighters for freedom."

The NRA's convention comes just two weeks after its major victory over President Barack Obama in defeating a U.S. Senate vote over a major gun control bill.

Friday's lineup has a political rally in the afternoon with conservative leaders from Texas and around the country, including former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum.
