(CNN) -- Investigators probing the June 3 attack on the mosque in Yemen's presidential palace say more than one bomb was used but only one went off, a Western official in the capital of Sanaa told CNN.

President Ali Abdullah Saleh was injured in the strike, which occurred when senior officials were attending Friday prayers, and he was transported for treatment to Saudi Arabia, where he remains.

U.S. officials have consistently said it was a bombing attack but never said more than one explosive was used.

Now, a Western official says, authorities have determined that more than one bomb was found in the mosque.

"Not all of them exploded," said the official, who noted that U.S. officials are "providing expert assistance" in the probe -- still in its early stages.

Yemeni ruling party officials have been saying that Saleh will return to Yemen on Friday, but the official said authorities regard the president's injuries as serious and doubt he'll come back on Friday.
