Champions League crown for Barcelona

Second-half goals from Lionel Messi and David Villa seal Barcelona's final successSpanish champions win Champions League for the fourth time since 1992Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson denied a record third victory after 3-1 defeatBarcelona also beat the English club in the 2009 final in Rome

(CNN) -- Barcelona won European football's biggest prize for the fourth time on Saturday, beating Manchester United 3-1 in the final of the UEFA Champions League.

The Catalan club came to London's Wembley Stadium having also defeated the English side in the 2009 final, and took the lead through Pedro before Wayne Rooney made it 1-1 at halftime.

However, second-half strikes from world player of the year Lionel Messi and David Villa gave Pep Guardiola's team a double this season after also winning the Spanish league crown.

Barca clinched a third success against English clubs, having also beaten Arsenal in the 2006 final.

The team's breakthrough title in 1992 -- the last time when the competition was known as the European Cup before changing format -- was also in London at the old Wembley before England's national stadium was rebuilt.

United manager Alex Ferguson had been hoping to become the first manager to win the Champions League three times, but will this season have to make do with just a domestic crown -- which was a record 19th English title.

"I expected us to do better but at the end of the day we were beaten by the better team," he told reporters.

"They are the best team we have ever played, they are at the peak in this cycle of their team.

We were beaten by the best team in Europe and there is no shame in that
--Alex Ferguson, United manager

"There was good evidence we are a consistently good European team, but we were beaten by the best team in Europe and there is no shame in that."

The 69-year-old Scot, Britain's most successful coach after 25 years at Old Trafford, must have been fearing the worst when Barcelona's early pressure paid off in the 27th minute.

Midfield maestro Xavi picked out Pedro on the edge of the United penalty area and the 23-year-old winger calmly sidefooted a shot past veteran goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

Pinto's picks: The European season in hindsight

But the lead proved short-lived as United pulled a trick out of their opponents' book seven minutes later, pressuring Barca into conceding possession in their own half.

England striker Rooney then played two slick return passes, the second with veteran Ryan Giggs giving him room to curl a right-foot shot past Victor Valdes.

Barcelona should have regained the lead just before the interval but Messi could not connect with Villa's inviting right-wing cross.

However, the Argentina superstar made amends in the 54th minute when he was given far too much time and space outside the United box, and lashed a wicked curling shot past Van der Sar for his 53rd goal this season.

That strike meant he matched the mark of Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who was on the losing side with United in 2009 -- when Messi also scored the second goal in Barca's 2-0 triumph.

He also equaled former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy's record of 12 goals in the post-1992 competition in one season.

The 40-year-old Van der Sar, playing his last game before retiring, did well to deny Messi with two quickfire saves but was helpless as Villa sealed victory with 21 minutes to play.

The Spain striker curled a right-foot effort from the edge of the area after United failed to clear, with Messi again involved in the build-up.

Brazilian takes crown as world's oldest person (AP)

SAO PAULO – A 114-year-old Brazilian woman is the world's oldest living human, Guinness World Records said Wednesday.

Maria Gomes Valentim attributes her longevity to eating a daily roll of bread for breakfast along with fruit — though she indulges in the occasional nip of wine.

Guinness said that Valentim, aged 114 years and 313 days, is 48 days older than the world's former oldest human, Besse Cooper from Monroe, Georgia.

Cooper now holds the title of the oldest living North American.

Guinness verified that Valentim was born on July 9, 1896, in Carangola in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, where she has always lived.

Known as "Grandma Quita," Valentim's family says she has a stubborn streak and has always made a habit of minding her own business. They also say her own father lived to be 100.

"She says she has lived long because she has always taken care of her own life — and not the life of others," granddaughter Jane Ribeiro Moraes, 63, told a local newspaper.

Moraes added that Valentim has a great affection for feijoada — Brazil's national dish, a hearty bean stew with various cuts of salted pork meat — and chicken empada pastries "with a lot of hot sauce."

Craig Glenday, editor in chief of Guinness World Records, said Valentim represents an unprecedented feat for Brazil.

"To receive a claim from a woman born during the reign of Queen Victoria — before the Ford Motor Company was formed, or before even George and Ira Gershwin, were born — is remarkable in itself, but for that woman to be Brazilian makes it extra special. Never has a successful claim for longevity emerged from Brazil — until now," he said.

Guinness said it has received several claims for potential "super centenarians" — but none before were ratified because of a lack of evidence or documentation.

Bound to a wheelchair but mostly in decent health, relatives hope the attention for Valentim might help out her financial situation. They say the woman gets by on Brazil's minimum pension — $335 a month — and relies on the public health system, as the humble family can't afford to pay for private health insurance.

Valentim married her husband Joao in 1913, but he died in 1946. They had one son, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Korean man found crucified, wearing thorn crown

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The body of a man with his hands and feet nailed to a wooden cross and a crown of thorns on his head has been found in an abandoned stone quarry, South Korean police said Wednesday.

A man wearing only underwear, with a wound on the side of his torso and nylon strings tied around his neck, arms and stomach, was found crucified Sunday in Mungyong, about 115 miles southeast of Seoul, said Chung Ji-chun, chief of the violent crime section at Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency.

Two smaller crosses were erected on each side of the cross he was nailed to, Chung said.

Police also found nails, a hammer, an electric drill, pieces of wood and instructions on how to build crosses inside a tent near the scene, Chung said. An SUV belonging to the dead man was found nearby.

Police are waiting for a forensic report to determine the exact time and cause of the man's death and whether it was a homicide or suicide.

Chung identified the man as a 58-year old surnamed Kim.

Popular representations of the death of Jesus Christ depict him crucified between the crosses of two thieves, wearing a crown of thorns, a white cloth over his loins, with a wound on his side from a Roman soldier's spear.
