Obama's day: Jobs and war

Good morning from The Oval. On this day in 2001, Pope John Paul II, during a trip to Syria, became the first pope to enter a mosque.

Nearly a week after the death of Osama bin Laden, things are starting to return to normal at President Obama's White House, and that means an emphasis on jobs and the economy.

The Labor Department is due to report the latest unemployment numbers this morning.

Obama addresses the jobs situation during a trip to Indianapolis, where he will tour an auto transmission plant. His visit to Allison Transmission also has an energy aspect -- the company makes systems for new hybrid vehicles.

Afghanistan is never far from the surface, however, and Obama then travels to Fort Campbell, Ky., to speak with troops returning from the war zone.

The president also meets with members of the special operations team involved in the bin Laden operation in another part of the war zone, Pakistan.

The meeting comes as the Obama administration again changes the narrative of what happened during the raid, as reported by Mimi Hall and Kevin Johnson of USA TODAY.

In other news:

Obama visited Ground Zero yesterday, as reported by our USA TODAY colleague Martha T. Moore.

The U.S. is still trying to figure out how bin Laden managed to hide in plain sight.

Bin Laden's death dominated the first debate with Republican presidential candidates, reports Jackie Kucinich of USA TODAY.

Big floods are coming downstream along the Mississippi River.

And Republicans are re-thinking their Medicare proposals.

We're moving forward here at The Oval, ready to discuss the new jobs numbers and Obama's trip. Please join us in the hours ahead, and enjoy the weekend.
