(CNN) -- An apartment fire in a Chicago suburb early Sunday killed six people, including at least three children, authorities said.
The three-story building in Aurora, Illinois, was engulfed in flames by 4:06 a.m. Sunday, when firefighters responded to the scene, according to a statement from city spokesman Dan Ferrelli.
Three bodies were found at the scene of the blaze, and nearly a dozen people were taken to two nearby hospitals, the statement said.
At Provena Mercy Center Hospital, a young boy was pronounced dead on arrival, it said. Five other victims, two suffering from critical injuries, were also taken to Mercy.
Two toddlers who were taken to Rush Copley Medical center were also pronounced dead, the statement said. Six other people were being treated at that facility.
