CAIRO – Egypt says it has replaced its candidate for head of the Arab League at the last minute, backing its current foreign minister for the job.
The foreign minister, Nabil Elaraby, is a popular diplomat who backed the uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak's regime.
The 22-member Arab organization was due to choose a new secretary-general Sunday to replace Amr Moussa, who is running for president of Egypt.
The choice for head of the Arab League is traditionally agreed in advance. This year, Egypt and Qatar were both running candidates, dividing league members.
With the new Egyptian nomination, disclosed in a government document, Qatar withdrew its candidate.
Egypt's original candidate was Moustafa el-Fiqqi, a member of Mubarak's ruling party. Reform activists hotly criticized his nomination.
